Poem for the Month of July, 2003

"The Bodhi tree, Mara and me"
by Woman Monk

The Bodhi tree,
Mara and me
sat around one day.

Mara handed me the dice,
I rolled them,

the tree witnessed.

What came of this game?
Nirvana, Samsara, Eternity.
The usual.

Mara started to laugh,
I started to doubt,
the tree was silent.

I started to formulate
arguments against Mara
but then I remembered
the tree.

I sat up straight again
and became still.
Three became one.
Perfection.
