Heart Of Gold |
Unc is sitting in the Del Charro bar in Santa Fe, listening to Neil Young sing:
I want to live, I want to give I've been a miner for a heart of gold. It's these expressions I never give That keep me searching for a heart of gold And I'm getting old.
He may be, but I'm not. I'm getting younger. Living on the road does that for you. :-)
This particular Road Trip finds me back in one of my fave bars during the period when I lived here in Santa Fe. It's a friendly place with acceptable music on the sound system, even more acceptable margaritas, and the cheapest and best bar food in town. If you make it here, you have to try the salmon wrap (only 5 bucks) or the burger (only 4) or even the tostada (5 bucks). And, sometime during the two and a half years since I've been here last, the bar has acquired free WiFi. What is not to like?
Anyway, I landed in Santa Fe this morning after 30 hours of travel. I'm only back for a few days. This particular Road Trip is about pulling lines, and I've been doing that all along the Way so far. First I went to Paris and pulled some lines out of there, then to Amsterdam, which was a little tougher to let go of.
And now Santa Fe. Santa Fe's gonna be a bitch to let go of. Everyone I meet is neat, every conversation I get into is a winner. It's still a wonderful place.
But there are many wonderful places, and if you want to fully dive into the new wonderful places, sometimes you have to cut your lines to the wonderful places from the past. I'm really looking forward to really getting in to my new home in the south of France, so this Road Trip became necessary to clear the way for that. It's been a ball so far. And from the stereo a voice sings:
I've been to Hollywood I've been to Redwood I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold I've been in my mind, it's such a fine line That keeps me searching for a heart of gold And I'm getting old.
Not getting old, Neil. That's a limited and constricting way to look at the quest for the heart of gold. You're not getting old, dude. You're just getting on, to the next place, the next experience. Hollywood was nice, and Redwood was nice, and the hearts you met there were wonderful. But there are more ahead.
Throw off that "getting old" shit. That's just society telling you that to make you tired and get you to forget the magic of moving on, of never settling, of never giving up on the quest. The heart of gold is out there, man. Keep on truckin'. You'll find it. And when you do, I suspect you'll find that it was there all along, at every step of the Way.
