Subject: Extra-Ordinary
It is only ordinary if you're in that environment. Most people aren't, so it isn't ordinary to them and it does become a form of escapism.

The book takes you into their world, so, it seems ordinary because in that world people are practicing magic. But we are onlookers from a world much different, so, it does hold a fascination. It only seems ordinary because the book brings up the day-to-day interactions that we can identify with. The only difference is they have magical tools to handle them.

I think you're too blase about the "chop wood" before and after comparison. I think there is a difference before and after. Before, it's just a person who thinks he is only chopping wood, but after, he is doing the same actions, but he is detached from his actions. So, there is a difference.
