New Developments in Grant-Making
The Foundation has established a combination permanent endowment fund and scholarship program with Naropa University of Boulder, Colorado. Naropa University functions in the unique position of devoting itself to the training of Buddhist scholars and activists, whose graduates will lead Buddhist communities throughout America. The Foundation has established a permanent endowment of $100,000 and an annual grant of $30,000 for three years for the purpose of encouraging scholarship and Buddhist community leadership in the United States for those students on an undergraduate and graduate level in the Universitys Religious Studies Department. In consideration of the permanent endowment and the income it will produce, and by reason of the promised annual grants, Naropa University has agreed to match funds for this undergraduate scholarship program in the sum of $32,500. Thus, over three years there will be available to undergraduate students a total of $65,000 in scholarship funding. In addition, the Foundation, through the University, has established The Frederick P. Lenz Foundation Merit Scholarship, which will generate $15,000 per year for scholarships in the graduate program, assisting students seeking a Master of Divinity or Master of Engaged Buddhism Degree in the Department of Religious Studies. The undergraduate scholarship is based upon a combination of need and merit, whereas the graduate scholarship is based upon merit alone.
