Subject: La Fête de la Musique...again...

I'm not sure where the connection between the Summer Solstice and music originated, but a quick Google on the two terms shows that they are, in fact, linked. There seem to be dozens of music festivals, concerts, and similar musical happenings scheduled around the world for this longest day.

But total up all of them, all over the world, and you wouldn't even scratch the surface of what France does on the Summer Solstice each year. Again, I have no idea where or why the tradition originated, but it's a cool one. In every town in France stages are erected in the town square, amps are hauled in, lights are strung up, and big concerts/dances held for the people, all paid for by the nation of France. Every town. In the smallest (which in France can be 100-200 people), there will be one concert, this evening. In larger towns and cities, there can be dozens. In this morning's paper I counted over 600 locations in Paris where free concerts are being offered today and tonight.

It's a cool tradition. I could plan ahead and zip around on the Metro to see only the biggest bands, or the ones I'm most interested in, but I know me, and I won't. I'll just start walking, and spend the day and evening being drawn by the sound of music everywhere I go. I'll wander from arrondissement to arrondissement, from neighborhood to neighborhood, following the music. It's big fun, and kind of a Taoist approach to having fun.

If they don't have such a festival in your 'hood, and you have the evening to yourself, you might consider jacking in to your CD player or iPod and doing the same thing on your own. The muses associated with the Solstice seem to like the music, and tend to smile upon those who also like it...
