Whenever one is moved by one of these pieces of information that comes one's way on the Internet, it is often a good idea to check out www.snopes.com or one of the other sites that specializes in verifying or disproving urban legends before passing it on. Their page on this story is at: http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/taps.htm
The thing is, we're all suckers for a good story. We fall for them even when, as this one, they're complete lies. In general on the Net, the sappier and more emotionally manipulative the story, the more likely it is that it was made up by someone and is false, so the more critical it is to verify the story before passing it along.
