The Yama Box quiz |
Back in college, almost certainly under the influence of something psychedelic, I wrote a short sci-fi story about a young guy who, traveling in India, discovers a magic box that invokes Yama, the Hindu Lord Of Death. It was sort of a genie-in-the-bottle riff, in that the inscription on the box says that every time the box is opened, Lord Yama will awaken and use his magical powers to "see" the 108 Most Dangerous Beings On The Planet and then kill them instantly. But the inscription then goes on to warn against ever opening the box.
Well, the young guy is a sensitive sort, and knows that the world is in bad shape, so he ignores the warning and opens the box. Nothing seems to happen, but the next day the News is full of the deaths of 108 people all over the world, and the mysterious nature of their deaths -- they just spontaneously combust. And for about a month the world seems to get better -- fewer wars, better government, less poverty, etc.
However, soon things are back to normal and the future of the world looks bleak again, so the kid opens the box a second time. Next day, 108 more people all over the world burst into flame and sure enough, things get better for a while.
But after another month or so, the world's in deep shit again, and the kid decides to open the box one more time. He does, and instantly bursts into flames.
:-) Hey, I told you it was probably written while practicing Better Living Through Chemistry. :-)
Anyway, with that story in mind, who do YOU think would be the most likely candidates to go up in flames if you opened the Yama Box on March 20, 2003?
Would Yama turn the visible, mainstream "bad guys" like Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden and Yassar Arafat into toast? Or would he take a longer, more cosmic view of things, and turn George W. Bush, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, Ariel Sharon and Donald Rumsfeld into crispy critters?
Whaddya think? If you were Yama, and trying to "see" the future, who do you think the Most Dangerous Beings On The Planet are?
