Dogs of the world unite! |
About a year and half ago I took in two little puppies that had been left out in a box in the rain in front of a meditation student's house. It was Rama's birthday. I had had a dream the night before where my lost dog, Runtie, told me he was coming back. So I took in these two souls...
The first time I put the dog collar around my boy dog, Moses, he looked at me with insolence. He is such a moralist like Thoreau! It was like he was saying to me "How dare you collar me sir, I respect your superiour size and strength, but I protest this barbaric behavior!"
Today as I walked the 100 lb. clumsy absent-minded professor of ethics, Moses, I patted him on the head and said: "I'm sorry. I know you want freedom". But then I realized what freedom meant for him:
1. Freedom to destroy property
2. Freedom to topple trash cans
3. Freedom to chase cats
4. Freedom to unsucessfuly hunt and get injured by pigs
5. Freedom to kill chickens, game chickens
6. Freedom to scare kids
7. Freedom to tear up gardens (big deal here :-)
8. Freedom to take dumps, every which way but loose
9. Freedom to drag trash back to my house
etc...
Well I realized for the first time, I couldn't support his growing liberation movement for dog freedom. I was totally comfortable, for the first time ever, as being his captor. I am the Orwellian Tonal of his life. Humanity has set up a dog apartid, and I am a willing and glad participant.
