Re: Rama and Flower Week |
Nice suggestion, Apprentice. Here's the actual talk, if it helps anyone who was there to remember or inspires anyone who wasn't:
October 20, 1982
"This week I'd like you to think about flowers. And I'd like you to go out and get yourself some flowers. Flowers are very neat, that's why I almost became a botanist. Nature is very important. The flowers! You should have a lot of flowers in your house, have them on your meditation table, put them in your ears, give them to each other. Flowers are very important because they have no value. You can't do anything with them; they all die; they don't last. They're just beautiful, one of the most beautiful, pure things I know. There's a mystery to flowers. That's my point. I don't know if you've ever worked with flowers much. Or you could work with them all your life and never see what they were, that's what I'm saying — there's a mystery to flowers.
"So I'd like you this week to think about flowers if you've never thought about flowers. Just for a week, and then we'll talk about flowers. And next week I'd like you to bring a lot of different types of flowers to the meditation. We'll fill the place up with flowers, have a flower party. Try and bring very strange ones, in other words, not your usual flowers. They don't have to be giant things, they could be daisies, but do me one favor — make sure they're clean. And I want you to think about flowers, every day when you meditate. Just for a week — just seven days, that's all, seven nights, I'd like you to think about flowers in your meditation. At some point in your meditation, consider what they mean. All week long, I will be sending you inwardly direct spiritual knowledge about flowers.
"This is a definite thing, it's a deal, but you've got to do your part. I'll teach you about what flowers mean in the astral world and in the occult worlds, all different things. I'll even come in your dreams this week and teach you about flowers if you really want. I'm willing to do this, I'll teach you some of the secret knowledge of flowers, but you have to do your part. You have to fixate your attention on flowers all week. If you don't do it I can't help you, you might as well pack it up. Flowers are a big thing here. Remember, this is Lakshmi, remember Lakshmi is beauty. And if beauty isn't in flowers, I don't know where it is. The things you count maybe don't, or maybe they do but not enough. Flowers.
"So let's see next week. Bring flowers, if you like. You might send me some on your birthday. I'd like to know it was birthday and think about you, because then I'll think that you're a flower. You're beautiful and you're transitory because you're still in time, like the flowers. But there's a secret to the flowers, there's a riddle there. And if you understand that riddle, you'll understand the riddle of your self. That's what I'm saying. And this week, our focus will be flowers, all week long, every meditation and in your dreams I'll just be visiting you and teaching you all about flowers for a week. From tonight to next week, then I'll turn the flower circuit off. But for a week you've got flowers on every level.
"Because if you don't think flowers are important, oh boy, have you got a lot to learn. That means you think that you're more important than the flowers are. And if you think you're more important than these flowers, then you shouldn't be meditating. You don't have the reverence necessary. You've gotta have a lot of reverence for these things, these are your friends. My God, they do this just for you! Fantastic! And do you notice? It's like a guy who doesn't see his wife after he's been married for years. That's how human beings are — it's disgusting. It really is. There's beauty all around them but they don't even see. They desecrate it. Sad, sad.
"But you can be different. And I'll teach you how to get out of time if you learn about flowers. But first you've got to learn about the flowers; you've got to learn about what counts. What counts is being beautiful, innocent, humble and somewhat silly. Also strong, pure, noble, serious. You can have all the spiritual qualities in the world but if you don't have humility, I've told you again and again, without humility you've got nothing. A big zero. Otherwise, you'll be like Narada, if you know anything about Narada, if you've ever read stories of Narada. He didn't understand flowers. Nice guy, tons of aspiration, but he didn't understand flowers. You've got to understand flowers. Practice purity and humility, in other words.
"See what you can do with flowers all week, OK? And I'll show you some very interesting stuff. It will be a fascinating week for you in terms of your daily meditations, what's going to be happening in your consciousness. Watch your dreams. In other words, I'm giving you a one-week special here. No, seriously, I'm going to turn on a certain circuit that you've never seen before for one week, one week only. You'd better take advantage of it while it's there. Flowers. One week, nothing but flowers, OK?"
