I am in the 70's. WTC is about 5 miles down the island.
Air conditions are slightly poor. You smell from the streets burning plastic -- "the smell of overheated automobile breaks".
It is hard to imagine what the experience is below 14th. Two additional buildings (One Liberty Plaza & WTC 5) are now threatened to collapse bringing the total three (WTC 1 [110 floors], WTC 2 [110 floors], WTC 7 [>40 floors]).
There is no bread for sale here. Except for rare frozen bread hidden in health food stores and at restaurants. The populace is calm. Shell shocked.
Subways, taxis, all visitors are restricted from below 14th. All business are closed. Get a map. We are talking about Soho, Tribeca, Wall Street, Battery Park City, The Alphabets, West Village, East Village, Lower East Side, Noho... others. I don't have my map in fron t of me.
Heart and spirit and all wishes go to those hurt or hurting. May those who can be found, be found and those who are lost be found again.
All disaster recovery centers (mostly across the river in Jersey) are opened. Wall Street is closed, perhaps until Monday. Bonds may be open for sale tomorrow. National air traffic has not resumed. Gas is 2 times the price in the area around Chicago of United States. Banks were given special restrictions in NYC.
Crime is down. National goverment demonstrates complete unification pleadging everything short of declaring war (on terrorism). The world's countries have expressed sympathy and made genuine gestures of sharing in the pain.
Rescue attempts continue fervently. Blood supply is always low. FBI closes on suspects and links. The Manhattan perception internally and externally has completely changed.
The world, its economy, transportation, & balances of political and economic power, completely changed yesterday.
