Travel broadens |
A good friend was visiting this weekend, and in the course of many wonderful conversations I found myself remembering and telling a couple of stories that I thought I'd share with you guys as a kind of conversation-starter.
The first story came out when we were talking about America and what is wrong with it. While in France last year, I stumbled upon an interesting fact that, to me, explains a great deal about *why* things are wrong with America. It's kind of a trivia quiz: "What percentage of Americans own passports?" She didn't know the answer. Neither will you, so I'll let you think about it while I tell the other story.
I once spent a couple of weeks teaching meditation with Rama in Amsterdam. It was a fascinating experience, primarily because it was one of the first times I had been able to spend extended periods of time outside of the U.S. I was shocked at the clarity of my meditations, at the sense of expandedness that I felt while there. And on the flight back home, I was even more shocked by what I felt and, at a seminar, tried to find a way to explain to Rama how it felt.
What I came up with was that flying back to the U.S. had felt like the scene in 2001 where Dave is pulling the circuit boards from HAL. "My mind is going, Dave. I can feel it. My mind is going..." That's what it felt like to me. Every mile I got closer to the U.S., the more of that expanded awareness and clarity seemed to fade from my mind. Rama agreed with both my metaphor and the experience.
The answer to the trivia question? Five percent.
The point of all this? When contemplating a summer vacation, you might try going to another country for a while to see how things feel there. It can help to inspire you to try to feel more like that at home.
