The Game |
Does the outcome of a baseball game matter? Only if you allow yourself to get tied up in the game or the importance of going to the World Series. People can get tied up in a game to different degrees. Some are die-hard fans who live and breath the game. They spend their off-season second guessing and trying to decide who the team should draft for next year.
Then there is the family who goes to one game just to have fun. The outcome really doesn't matter to them, only that they had a good time along the way.
This world is full of causes that we can get tied up in. It's good to try to help others, but if we start forgetting the fun of life because 'My Cause' is distracting us from what's important then we're making a mistake.
What causes us to forget? I think that a major culpret is emotion. When someone uses a graphic image or tries to make you feel anger or injustice they are trying to get us to feel emotion. When we enter into the realm of emotion we stop thinking clearly. Our viewpoint gets shaded by the ideas that the person writing the article is presenting (or we reject the ideas that the person is presenting and feel anger toward them). In any case, what the person is doing is manipulating us to get us to take on their view.
We are all susceptable to this. When I read something I like to try to analyze what the person is really trying to say and how they are saying it? What tools of manipulation are they using to convince me of their viewpoint?
So, have fun with the game. Participate in it. Use graphic images to manipulate others into seeing your viewpoint. But always remember that it's just a game. Does anyone ever really die?
