From the perspective of the US military, if you're a guy there's a whole set of laws regarding the draft, which while currently mostly inactive, can certainly in terms of war be quickly re-activated...we don't draft gals yet over here and we don't let them serve in all military positions.
Men are considered "players" are at a deeper level in the cultural understanding and women aren't accepted at that level all the way, at least not in the US.
