What makes a hero? |
I was just watching a flick and found myself thinking about heroes, and about how different people's ideas are about what constitutes a 'hero.' I realized that for me, just being able to kick butt is not enough. Self preservation is not enough. There has to be an ethical component to the hero's life, something that makes them care (and act) more for others than they do for themselves. So, for me, Ripley wasn't a hero in Alien, but she was in Aliens. Mel Gibson wasn't a hero in Lethal Weapon, but he was in Braveheart. He was not a hero at the beginning of the Road Warrior, but was at the end.
Whether you agree with this idea or not, who do you think were the heroes in this year's movies, and why?
For me, they included:
Russell Crowe in Gladiator Richard Harris in Gladiator Chow Yun Fat in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich Cate Blanchett in The Gift Giovanni Ribisi in The Gift Ginger in Chicken Run (and Rocky at the end) Bruce Willis in Unbreakable
