The Third Level Of Magic |
[ I have started a variant of this thread before, and the responses have never failed to inspire me and lead me to new books to read or movies to watch. So I am spinning it out again, in the hopes that it might inspire not only me but anyone who is occasionally tempted to write. ]
Once upon no time, I got Rama talking about writing. He said something like:
There are three levels of writing. The first level is when you're writing in your Journal only because I told you to. You're just writing things down...no Art...just the facts, ma'am.
The second level is when you put some attention into it. You try to capture one of our adventures -- a desert trip, a movie night, a conversation like this one -- and try to actually do justice to it in words. You never can, so it's very Zen. But if you get close, when you reread the story, even years later, it will shift your attention back to the same place it was in when you had the original experience. Level Two is magic.
The third level is where you put so much attention into your writing that someone else reading the story -- even if they were not present during the original moment and have never in their lives had a spiritual experience like it -- can experience the moment with you. Level Three is big-time magic.
So, if this description of writing appeals to you, I guess my questions are:
1. Whose writing has affected you that way -- reached out through the pages and shifted your assemblage point and put you in a completely different state of attention? It could be Rama's or anyone else's. It doesn't have to be a book. It could be a movie or a CD.
2. Have you ever pulled off Levels Two or Three in your own writing or through other artform? What's it feel like?
