I recently attended a seminar with a Buddhist Lama who I believe to be enlightened. Someone in the audience asked him if he was. I recall his reply was something along the lines of "No, I am not. Though in many other traditions of Buddhism I would be considered so. But as a Tibetan Buddhist I believe not. The only person I have met who I believe to be truly enlightened was the 16th Kamapa, who could speak of events hundreds of kilometres away as if they were in the same room, and see events years down the track accurate to the day. He *was* part of those moments, there was no separation."
I thought this was very beautiful and terribly humble. I just grinned.
Reality is, that no matter whether I think he is, or he doesn't, does not matter one iota - he has teachings for me that are terrifically valuable, *they* are "enlightened". |
