Subject: ECO or Politico

A Rama student recently recommended Al Gore's book "Earth in the Balance" for inclusion in the Media Jungle section at VayuLila. My intuitive reaction was No!

Since this issue is more likely to effect future rather than current students, I thought it might pay to get an opinion or three before making a final decision.

Preamble (so that you have some idea of where I'm coming from):

My view on some of the higher profile ECO-activist (Grrreen with a capital G) groups is that by polarising communities they are counter-productive.

Further, some of the now major Green organizations collectively spend the majority of their funds (and on an annual basis were are talking billions) on political lobbying, etc.. Some of these funds are wielded like a big political stick, ie: do as we say, or NO bucks! As a result they have considerable political clout in poverty stricken third world countries.

The results of some of these political machinations are highly questionable and often appear to be contrary to the wellbeing of the very people / environments for which the funds were donated. Meanwhile environments get trashed and people around the world die from starvation, disease and assorted preventable circumstances … due to a lack of funds!

So having said, perhaps you will understand my caution when it comes to linking up to things political. As I understand, the pre-election machinery is rolling in the USA. Al Gore will at some stage be involved in this process. It is unlikely that a recommendation of a book on VayuLila is likely to have any real bearing on the outcome of an election … but of course it could.

I happen to keep an eye on international politics, but I’m no expert, and I am certainly not in a position to make recommendations to the voters of other nations. Also, I have not read this book myself (yet), so I have no immediate frame of reference as to it’s content (Al isn’t all that big down-under :-)

The recommendation as stated:

I also think your part of the site might make mention of Al Gore's book "Earth in the Balance".

Rama recommended this book to us at one point and said he thought Al Gore would make an excellent President...

If it were not for the words “Rama recommended this book”, you probably wouldn’t be reading this.

Your responses will be appreciated.

Namaste.
