Re: All that horrible stuff about your teacher |
No "officers" here. Just a buncha folks who learned some valuable things from an outrageous, unique individual and who gather together in this place from time to time to chew the cyberfat.
The other folks who have replied have done a good job with presenting some of the viewpoints you can find here. They run the full gamut from people who feel that Rama was fully enlightened and that everything in these articles is a lie to people who feel it was all true and that he was a slime to people like me who know that some of the stuff in the articles was true (although the "take" on it was slanted to present the information in the worst possible light) but that my personal experience was of studying with a fascinating gentleman who taught me a great deal. It's an individual thing because we're all individuals.
Basically, I think that Rama was the most fascinating person I have ever met on this rock. He had some aspects of his personality that were at the very least odd. That personality may have made some questionable decisions along the way. But the knowledge -- the techniques he taught me and the information he imparted to me -- that has never failed me. I value the things I learned from him because they have enabled me to change my life in any number of positive ways.
I once asked a friend who had also studied with Rama what, in retrospect, she thought of him. She said she thought he was "an enlightened crazy person." I laughed. I'll bet he would have, too. I can live with that description. The man was outrageous. Some of the things he did made him a sitting duck for yellow-press journalists whose primary motivation in life is selling papers. But he taught me a lot, and as far as I can tell he never lost faith in my ability to take what he taught me and use it to change my life and benefit the lives of others. So I have no regrets. None. And I have no reservations about recommending the teachings he left behind to others. That's pretty much the whole story -- the teachings. Rama ain't around. There is no organization to join or be part of. This board is just a bunch of people chatting in cyberspace. Some of them teach classes in their spare time to pass along what they have learned; others don't.
So my suggestion is the same as the one the other folks here have made. Look around. If any of the things said appeal to you, consider following up on them in your own way and integrating them into your own spiritual path. If things don't feel right, ignore them completely. That's all that any of us here wants you to do -- to follow your own intuition and find your own spiritual path. Just don't give up on seeking. THAT is what the "Fellow Monk" wants you to do -- to become jaded and cynical and believe that there IS no path. |
