This is what I remember Rama saying about your questions:
How to prepare for solstice:
Clean your closets, straighten up your life, pay your bills, settle outstanding issues...in other words, get your act together. You can think of it like going on a long trip. Before you go, it's nice to clean your house, may sure your neighbors are picking up your mail, etc. Then you can relax on your trip and know that everything is done. Times of power are like that too. The difference is that you are making a shift in consciousness. If you prepare impeccably for that moment - you have a better trip!
How to take advantage of them:
Being in nature is a nice way to get back in touch with the rhythms of the universe. Take a hike, scuba dive, snowboard...whatever makes you feel that you are communing with the Infinite. Rama also suggested making a list of your goals on the solstice until the next equinox(or visa-versa). Then you can chart your progress within a specific period of time.
The different between them:
The circle of seasons really begins at the Spring Equinox (much like our friend Aries is at the beginning of the Zodiac). The springtime is about new beginnings. Rama said that this is the *best* time to make resolutions because you are more likely to follow them. He also said that March is a powerful month because the winds of March bring kundalini - a powerful energy that helps change. He often made changes in his teaching during this time.
Summer Solstice
Festivals in India during the Summer Solstice last for days. It is literally and spiritually the day of most light. It is a time of expansion and celebration. So, you don't get a lot of work done, but isn't it great to be alive?
Fall Equinox
Now the kids go back to school. People put away their lawn chairs and get out the rakes to clean autumn leaves. The wind takes on a slight chill. The energy begins to direct inward. Rama said that this is a good time to start getting serious about study, work, etc.
Winter Solstice
For those of us in the western hemisphere, this time is quickly approaching. This is the "occult" time of the year, the time when the energy is the most internal. For those interested in the "occult" path (read Castastaneda's books), this is an interesting time. The energy is as powerful as the Summer Solstice (perhaps more so), but the energy is internal...in the inner worlds. This is a good time to go within, take stock, and meditate, meditate, meditate!
And if you are on the other side of the globe - reverse it and enjoy a wonderful Summer Solstice!
