------------

Nothing is ever black or white. Compared to most of the world America is an extraordinarily free place. Yes, as others have noted elsewhere, there is oppression, unfairness and discrimination here. But it also offers the promise of opportunity and freedom that serves as a model around the world. The freedoms that we enjoy have been paid for by sacrifices of those who came before us. We are making some sacrifices in the cause of religious freedom for those who will come after us as well.

Looking from inside we see the flaws that exist within the system and we complain about them. But looking from outside, when you compare America to China or a lot of other countries you will understandably see a haven of freedom and justice. Both views are accurate. Just because we are a model to others does not mean that we can not improve ourselves.

And when I start feeling paranoid about the persecution that I have received I don't have to look very far in order to find things that I am thankful for or to remind me how lucky I was to have been born here.
