the strongest action we can take |
All good suggestions.
However, I would just add that the current situation in Burma exists because the results of a democratic election, in 1990 or so, won by Aung San Suu Kyi, were not respected by the junta which undemocratically retained power.
I believe the strongest action we can take in this situation is to lead by example when it comes to democracy. Many feel that the proper outcome of our Nov 2000 election was not respected by the Supreme Court. Some feel the Nov 2004 election was tainted as well.
Even given our best efforts, we here in America may or may not be able to control what happens in Burma. We have a better chance of controlling what happens here in America. For those who are politically inclined and into karma yoga, I am thinking the best possible thing we can do for the world at large is to put our energy into ensuring that America has an honest, fair election whose results are respected in Nov 2008.
Not to say we cannot or should not try to help Burma. But I am saying our first priority should be restoring our own democratic traditions. |
