Enlightened Secrecy? |
Over the years, I've seen a few references to enlightened former students, but I have never heard of anyone willing to actually give anyone's name. I know there is a fear of bad publicity, but isn't the fear a bit extreme? If that is not why, what is the reason? I guess I would understand if they were starting teaching and felt a little vulnerable. But if they are fully enlightened, wouldn't they want to provide darshan - if they are a teaching buddha?
It would be nice if some of these Rama students would come out of the closet with their realizations. I guess I'm a bit surprised there are some students that are now claiming enlightenment, but they want to keep it quiet, even from former students. That was so unlike Rama and anything he taught. Sure, he didn't let just anybody become a student...but for decades he gave public meditations so that people could check him out.
If someone was sincerely enlightened, that would be wonderful and of interest to a number of people on the board. But when everything is shrouded in a deep secrecy (Didn't we learn how to create websites?) it makes me question the validity of the claim.
I don't think I would have ever seen Rama for the first time if somebody said to me, "Hey, you gotta meet this guy. He's enlightened, but I can't tell you anything about him. You have to come with me across the country and I'll take you to him". In fact, the first time I met him it was at a public in my town. He gave a inexpensive talk and afterwards handed out a free book, a tape and brochures. Tons of information for me to pour over in the pre-internet age.
So far Shiva(Tony Chester) is the only former student I know of that is well established and very public about his teaching. I don't believe he claims enlightenment, but I appreciate that he's made himself available.
Are there any students claiming enlightenment that are actually public?
