Re: Enlightened Secrecy? |
Based on nothing more than my own experience and that of many other seekers, both within Rama's tradition and in other spiritual traditions, I would have to say that the primary danger of "going public" with one's enlightenment is that it might very well be *temporary* enlightenment.
A lot of people have this idea that enlightenment just happens, and then, having happened, it's permanent, and sticks around. That has *not* been the experience of dozens of people I know. Their enlightenment experiences come and go. A week here, a month here, six months or a year there -- 24/7 contact with infinity, living enlightenment. And then a week here, a month here, six months or a year there NOT enlightened.
So what happens if you're going through one of these enlightenment periods and you "come out" and present yourself as an enlightened teacher, and then, six months or a year down the road, the enlightenment "fades?" Would you have the humility and the strength of character to be honest with your students in such a position?
I've met a few people who *have* been exactly that honest, and I have great respect for them. And then I've met a few who *weren't* that honest, and I've seen the karmas that tend to accumulate around that.
So while I understand the desire to find someone who declares themselves enlightened, I also understand the wisdom of those who might be having some strong enlightenment experiences and who choose to take the path of secrecy about it. The latter path just might be more compassionate for those who they teach than the former.
Just an opinion.
