Re: Fear of getting flamed |
Yes, flaming can hurt... it damages the subtle physical body. Words have power. Does anyone enjoy being yelled or screamed at? Like yelling in person, flaming someone is an act of anger and the intent is to direct negative energy at them. The effect is real, even if one isn't sensitive enough to feel it.
A few years back, I happened to be in a particularly high, blissful state of mind. I was supposed to spend the evening with a women I was dating. She was in a bad mood, and started yelling at me over something inconsequential. It actually hurt physically, like she was hitting me. I had to leave immediately.
Somewhere in the first series of Zen tapes -- I don't recall specifically which one -- Rama says essentially that trash talking about someone, even if they weren't present, does them harm the same way hitting them does. That statement stood out for me at the time, because it seemed a little far out and also a high standard to meet. I didn't get it then, but now I do.
Flaming people also doesn't conform to any sense of etiquette, spiritual or otherwise. How is it consistent with respecting others, having compassion for them, and being humble? And what about the Buddhist notion of Right Speech? How can it possibly be justified in the context of a committment to the enlightenment of all sentient beings?
