Walking in his footsteps…

Walking. As meditation. Perhaps the thing I remember most about Rama, I don’t know why, was how he walked. I remember the first time I ever saw him. I was living in England, and had just started going to meditation classes run by some of his students at various universities around London. We had been meditating on our heart chakras for several days leading up to his visit, and now we were all waiting, seated in a dark auditorium at the Royal College of Art right next to the Albert Hall. The stage had a gold Japanese screen with herons on it, a chair and small table next to it. The doors at the back opened, and as I turned to my left I saw a tall blonde-haired man, wearing a dark olive trenchcoat, walking casually down the stepped aisle to the front.

Now it could have been the huge kundalini rush of excitement, or the punch in the stomach kind of feeling that made me light headed for a while. But as if in slow motion, perhaps there was music playing too, but as if in slow motion. I saw this man’s presence in awe. His coat was swinging side to side, his gait (and it was gait) was so light, it was as if he wasn’t walking at all, but light footing it down to the steps. There was an ease, that on anyone else would have had an air of arrogance, but on him was just like a breath. Fresh air. Master. I immediately knew, just from his presence, his walk, that he was "The One". I had been a bit uncomfortable with the way the student teachers had been quite so gushing about the music being the best in the world, perfect, and a bit nervous about all the preparation, and whether I would be allowed to see him, etc, etc. Until I saw him walking. I was hooked. Every word, every look, every nuance of my being was enfired.

I tell you this because I do not know if you have seen Rama walk, talk, act. The mere motion, grace and poise was enough teaching in itself. Sometimes I have found myself mimicking the way Rama walked, it’s the most refreshing kind of feeling, light and bouncy steps, but relaxed, arms swinging, naturally. For a second we are one.
