What
is artificial intelligence?

Updated March 5, 2001
Why
should I be interested in artificial intelligence?

Rama once described artificial intelligence as the “crown chakra” of the information technology field. Artificial intelligence, or AI as it is often called, plays a Increase Your Chip Size!growing role in today’s IT applications. Software uses AI for many purposes such as deciding whether to issue you a credit card or approve your transaction, fighting terrorism, understanding your words in voice recognition software, deciding whether to audit your tax return, checking grammar in word processors, responding automatically to emails, and investigating an insurance customer for fraud. Beyond these, it is used for many other purposes.

WHAT'S COMING UP? In the weeks ahead we're going to focus on how to apply AI technology to build working systems in the real world. We’ll talk about what the hottest AI technologies are today and how to get involved with them.
