Om Mani Padme Hum
First Encounter with Rama

contributed by David

This is the story about how I encountered enlightenment and met my teacher Rama:

At about the time I met my spiritual teacher and root guru, Dr. Frederick Lenz, Rama, I would say that I was living a "spiritually minded" lifestyle in Berkeley California. I was checking out different schools of mediation and the like. In my quest, I met some of Rama's students who invited me to see Rama in Los Angeles at a black tie dinner at the Four Seasons hotel. At first, I wasn't going to go, and then something happened and I wound up just going.

I was very impressed by the elegance of Rama's dinner for some 400-500 people. The Four Seasons in Los Angeles was one of the best five star hotels in the world. The sushi tables seemed to be the length of a football field and the outdoor heating during reception was over the top. I remember also being impressed by the vitality and energy of his students who were mostly in the 20-30 year old age group earning six figure incomes as computer consultants (people in their 20's didn't usually make that much as far as I knew, and seeing so many in one place was an indicator of something very powerful in effect). But Rama was not there, and I was starting to wonder.

Then, sometime after I had eaten more than my share of 5 star buffet items, he walked out on stage wearing jeans saying that he had just arrived, and I remember thinking that that was odd as we were all wearing formal attire (Rama later switched to the most amazing Versace formal wear that I have ever seen).

Rama then proceeded to put on his new rock album "Retrograde Planet" at high volume levels featuring one of the most intense guitar jams of all time by world class guitarist Joaquin Lievano. I was stunned not only by the music, as I had never heard anything so intense in my life, but also by the fact it was being played and was produced by someone claiming to be a "spiritual teacher."

And Rama just stood there while the album played for some 40 minutes or so! And I was thinking to myself, man, this guy is so cool - he has serious balls to act like this! I had never in my life seen a party as lavish as this one, thrown by a white man in jeans claiming to be enlightened. I was looking around thinking - man this is a great party! This is the life for me!

I remember suddenly becoming aware that I felt really good (I mean REALLY GOOD). And then, everything just disappeared in to an infinite field of gold light that seemed to go on forever - in other words, the feeling was beyond words (far beyond). Rama performed many special effects by exercising his Siddhas to cause waves of light to wash out over the audience. At times it felt like I was in a room of infinite size. At other times the gold changed to a "reverse video" effect with Rama at the center of a void. The mind states and the feelings of ecstacy, timelessness and overall well being were beyond the beyond. I was speechless with "perma-grin" and the hard rock played on.

Not long after that first magical night, I applied and was accepted as a student by Rama and have been so ever since. Even if I had just had this one evening with Rama, I would still be a different person today. What I have learned from Rama over the past 6 years defies description. It is truly priceless and I cannot be grateful enough for the sacrifices that a being such as Rama makes to incarnate and teach others how to experience these states of mind.
